As gay as this film is, it's too white to appeal to modern American mainstream audiences, and it doesn't help that, by its own right, the flick has plenty of problems. If there is any meat to this character drama, then it is mostly likely found within the acting material for leads James Wilby and Hugh Grant, both of whom were newcomers at the time and could have fallen short, but really deliver, not just on effective chemistry, but by their own individual rights, with Grant being convincing as a questioning homosexual trying to run away from his true identity, while Wilby compels, often with strong emotional power, in his fearless portrayal of a gay man who fears, not only that his secret may be revealed, but that he will lose the man he holds so very dear. Working with a budget that is, in USD, only $2.6 million, art directors Peter James and Brian Savegar don't have a whole lot of opportunities to flesh out this period piece's look, thus the final product doesn't exactly excel at production value, but it does impress, with production designer Brian Ackland-Snow and costume designers Jenny Beavan, John Bright and William Pierce being thoughtful enough in their money spending to restore early 20th century England in a fashion that, while minimalist, is both attractive and convincing enough to immerse you. Yet because the film is so well made and acted, because it captures its period so meticulously, I enjoyed it even in disagreement. Maurice Ivory has actually been to this road. Please be aware the conservative may be horrified while the less conservative may be bored and feel a threat of their own. I am especially partial to the all too seldom a truly happy ending.

On top of there being not much to this plot, there's only so much that's refreshing about this plot, which meanders its way down a familiar path, and one that makes the meandering all the more severe by being pretty lengthy. Either way, the point is that James Wilby's career ended up being not as strong as Hugh Grant's, which is pretty depressing, especially when you consider that Wilby is the leading title character in this film.

I think that is because what is expressed in the movie is undoubtedly part of human nature, which can strike a chord in the depth of every human being's heart. There is some very good acting, and a very good sociological recreation of the Edwardian period.
Written as a traditional Bildungsroman, or novel of character formation, the plot follows the title character as he deals with the problem of coming of age as a homosexual in the restrictive society of the Edwardian era. | His notions are more platonic and idealistic. There he meets Clive Durham.
In fact I do believe the book is superior in many moments but, on the other hand, the film is far far superior in many other moments, and you can't really say this all the times. I like it even more today. In a society, that would rather see men fight and kill each other, than to see them embraceing. "Maurice" (prononced "Morris") is the film adaption of the book by E.M. Forster and stated to be semi-autobiographical of his life. This beautiful yet heartbreaking film actually made me cry the first time I saw it. 'Maurice' is the story of Maurice Hall, a student at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
James Wilby, Hugh Grant, Rupert Graves and Helena Bonham Carter are all excellent, heading a superior cast. Even after Clive married, he accepts Clive's invitation to stay in Clive's estate in the desperate hope of a requited love.
