If his cells don’t need oxygen, they can probably do without blood circulating. In the animated series from 1996, he needed a space suit. In such a case it would be easy to kill Superman by simu using oxygen as a delivery system for other gases or material to harm his cells. Even if not strictly in vacuum, at the altitudes Superman took Zod and Doomsday, the parts-per-million / density of air is so low it is effectively vacuum versus the way lungs breathe. They seem quite speculativeALSO, I think that may be it's just to make stories simple in movies & comics, that- He communicates in "Space". He can hold his breath as long as he needs to. Sure, he might still need oxygen to survive, and his Kryptonian physiology allows him to process it from the water, like a fish.

@SSumner - I disagree. But as you know he has superpowers (like X-Rayand all). Whether he needs to breathe or not, having a helmet in space could serve other purposes. I think other's have said he doesn't need to breathe and can travel across galaxies unassisted.

He can hold his breath as long as he needs to. If he needed oxygen that would be a weakness. Therefore, the helmet Green Lantern created for him may simply be a way for them to be able to conveniently communicate in a vacuum.
If he was in a position where he'd have to hold his breath, any communication in a vacuum that doesn't rely on lip reading (which wouldn't prevent him from holding his breath) is an indication of a plot hole.
