The Erie Canal is now used mainly for recreation. Fairport Herald (February 1873-March-1889, April 1890-December 1895, 1896-April 1925); Fairport Herald-Mail (May-December 1925); Fairport-Perinton Herald-Mail (1980-1992) The first settlers in Perinton were Glover Perrin, his wife Johanna and his brother Jesse. (It reverted to its original name in 1992). In the late 1960's and early 1970's the old canal town buildings were torn down and replaced with the new Village Landing and Packett's Landing complexes. It takes about 30 minutes to cycle from Route 250 to Canandaigua Road on the towpath. For every 100 females, there were 92.4 males. What was developed as the village of Fairport was a swampy area within the Town of Perinton until the 1820s, when it was drained by construction of the new Erie Canal. 9 records at the Fairport Historical Museum. The "Fairport Family" prides itself for being very close and integrating programs for all of the schools to participate in together. In 1829, the Post Office moved from Fullam's Basin to the Village of Fairport.From the 1850's to the 1950's, Perinton's history was primarily Fairport's history. Services, including a fire department, a public library, street lighting, and parks, enhanced the life of the town and village. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. In 1788, Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham purchased 2.6 million acres (11,000 km²) of land in the wilderness of Western New York. It was not until the suburban boom of the 1950's and 60's that the farms began to gradually disappear. Males had a median income of $50,094 v. $30,431 for females. The Fairport Village Landing, opened in 1977, and Packett's Landing, built in the early 1980s, are two of the main shopping, dining and gathering spots in the village. Deland Chemical later became Fairport Vinegar Works, makers of Certo brand pectin used to jell foodstuffs. Maps of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries show many family farms with names like Sunnycrest Farm and White Brook Farm. Early settlers buried here. The new buildings do, however, maintain the ambiance of a canal village, and allow Fairport to capitalize on the recreational aspects of the canal that have superseded its commercial use. The Village of Fairport has also changed significantly over the last 100 years. The park is a short walk on the canal from the village. The town of Perinton was first settled by European Americans in the two flat areas of Perinton Center (Turk Hill and Ayrault Roads) and Egypt. The median income for a household in the village was $53,375 and the median income for a family was $65,980. Both developments resulted from a then controversial decision to raze much of the core of historic buildings in the center of the village in favor of the style of urban development then coming into vogue. It opens the first Saturday of May and closes the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Board members are elected in the November general elections and serve a term of four years. The area was known as Township 12, Range 4, in the governmental unit of Northfield.Because the earliest settlers were farmers, they settled in the flat areas of the town that were easily cleared, specifically in Egypt and Perinton Center (the intersection of Turk Hill and Ayrault Roads). William Walker of Canandaigua purchased 36 square miles (93 km ) of the land and hired his brother Caleb and his cousin Glover Perrin (1762-1830) to survey and divide the land into 66 equal lots. Early commercial ventures also included blacksmith shops, taverns, and inns.
