Sometimes I hear people saying that “you have to know someone at Spotify to be able to land a job there”. I interviewed at Spotify (New York, NY) in August 2019.I was asked to create and then email a marketing plan for one of the business segments for the first round. Briefly explain your process, your specific contribution if you worked on a team, the result and your feelings about the result.

The process took 4+ weeks. Given that, I always appreciate when a candidate has a strong interest in music.

We want to hear your point of view; don’t get lost trying to be someone you think you should be. Shape your resume and cover letter to match Spotify’s tone. As some of you may already know, I worked at Spotify for almost three years. Behind the Carbonmade onboarding UX I interviewed at Spotify.Applied in November, got an email for an initial interview in January, had interview with 1 person via Google Hangout, and then had finalist interview with 2 people via Google Hangout in February.I applied online. The on-site has three parts:Meeting product managers, researchers, designers, and so on, to check soft and hard skills, as well as cultural fit.Finally, lunch with the team and a tour of the office.There is a comment that I love from Brian Collins (from the Collins agency) about looking for a "culture add," not a "culture fit.” We want people who help grow and push the culture forward, not ones that simply fit.

We’ve been growing a lot in the past couple of years and are continuously looking to further establish design and increase its impact in the company. Was eventually told that the team couldn't decide, and that I needed to complete a take-home assignment as the next step. They are interested to proceed further technical rounds.

And to get in the process you need to submit an application where we can read who you are, what you can do, and where you want to get to.

I want to see growth. Beyond that, be creative.

Again, this is something I’ve heard several times in this interview series. In a week Initial screening scheduled with Technical Lead. That’s a lot of résumés.

There are certainly openings, right now we hire about 1000 people every year. As for industry experience, I think it can be a blessing and a curse, so I try to consider each: if I meet someone who has little experience but loads of talent, then I’m assessing whether they have the grit to pursue it. If you’re not a great writer, it’d benefit you as a designer to take a class or practice to get better.

It’s not that we value a cultivated online presence or persona, but we like seeing people who are passionate about the discipline of design and who actively give back or get involved with the larger community.
