(Update) The numbers listed on the map correspond with a suggested order of visiting the sites, as originally designated by the first Lee’s Retreat maps. He managed to avoid disaster until a portion of his army was attacked and defeated at Sailor’s Creek on April 6. Many are also open to visitors by national, state and local battlefield park organizations.
