For me, who lived in the communist era, this book gave revelations. daarnaast is het natuurlijk een beschrijving van het absurde, misdadige Russische systeem, waaronder alle artiesten daar moesten werken. Then, thanks to a beloved 80-year-old teacher, her true soprano emerged--with a triumphant audition at the Bolshoi: she would soon star in the first Fidelio in Soviet history, along with Aids, Eugene Onegin, etc.

Very readable, published as one long interview divided into chapters.
Her story tells of the musical arts in soviet Russia and the powerful hold that the government has on that. Together they suffered exile from their beloved Russia for their outspoken advocacy of freedom but returned in triumph after the dissolution of the repressive regime that had stripped them of their citizenship. Vishnveyskaya has a funny matter-of-factness about her (reminds me a bit of Beverly Sills) that renders some more or less extraordinary encounters very believable. Give it a try! Made me understand how and why the system worked. Your next book is the memoirs of Galina Vishnevskaya, the opera singer. Musical matters - Bach and Beethoven, to be sure, but also the great Russian masters - are the focus of their thoughts, but their turbulent political battles coupled with a deep love for their homeland are pervasive themes as well. Start by marking “Galina: A Russian Story” as Want to Read: Galina writes incredibly well, and her life story is captivating. Octavo. Just read it. The great Russian soprano, Galina Vishnevskaya, widow of cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, died last month at the age of 86, prompting me to head straight to the library. Very readable, published as one long interview divided into chapters. Under later regimes, however, there would be harassment, restrictions, artistic shriveling--especially after the couple made Solzhenitsyn their four-year house-guest. First edition. Love the way MR and GV hijack the interviewer/critic questions (poor Claude, I can almost see him throwing up his hands and skipping out for a glass of dubonet and foie gras). In these conversations with French journalist and critic Claude Samuel, Rostropovich and Vishnevskaya tell their dramatic story from their marriage in 1955 (four days after meeting!)
A very Russian story indeed: wildly emotional, dipped in blood and vodka, funny and searing.© Copyright 2020 Kirkus Media LLC. Pages: 568. Soovitan soojalt kõigil lugeda. The extremes that dominated her life are read in her biography and heard in her singing. Vishenvskaya, widow of famed cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, was 86. She was extraordinarily pretty, also, as well as a wonderful singer. They veer off on wonderful tangents and what it was It is easy to forget what the meaning of 'closed' meant for artists in the Soviet Union. If I could, I would rate this book 7 stars. Great for anyone with an interest in Russian, Soviet, and Post-soviet music and musicians. Published heel interessant en goed geschreven. by Mariner Books 519pp. And the grand portrait of impetuous Slava--weeping, drinking, suffering for his moral courage (greater than her own)--keeps this deservedly proud testimony from ever seeming too self-centered. Amazing, heart warming, a bit sad (the soviet communism wasn't full of laughter) and first of all true, beautifully written story. At times, the author seems rather full of herself and at other times there is a gap in her explanations of what was happening to her and her husband. This narration covers plenty of years, plenty of unexpected turns in her biography, and some significant periods of Soviet history (from the 1930s into the Second World War and the Siege of Leningrad and into Stalin's scary era, in which opera singers had their own reasons to be scared, followed by Khruschev and Brezhnev).
If the author comes across as a little bit borderline--every single character is either a saint or a devil--the stories from her horrific childhood give some insight. Even though I read Vishnevskaya's biography Galina, I still learned new things from this book.
This may seem to be a subjective look into the maschinations of the artists' world of Russia but having experienced some of the intrigues which generally go along with this profession based not only on art and talent but also on ego, G.V. They all get discussed in her book as well as more and less important figures in music.Amazing book that gives you a window into the psyche of a great and passionate artist.
